Laura Lopez is a certified Birkman Method Consultant.
What is The Birkman Method?
The Birkman Method is a management tool that has been in use for over 50 years. The questionnaire has been completed by more than 2 million people from over 5,000 companies and is available in 16 languages. The tool allows you and the people in your organization to correct common misperceptions that you may have about other people. Some of these include:
- I’m normal – it’s those other people who have the problem!
- The best way to do it – is my way!
- The way people act is the way they need to be treated by others!
- Most people feel the way I do!
- There is an ideal behavioral style!
As a Birkman certified consultant, I believe:
- in emphasizing the positive aspects of personality
- individual differences allow creative options
- differences relate to personal, social and occupational behavior
- individuals can manage and strengthen positive behaviors
- in providing opportunities for personal, team and organizational growth
- every organization has its distinctive culture which needs to be acknowledged
How does knowing Your True Colors help you be more successful?
Each person within an organization brings distinctive strengths and capabilities to the team. The Birkman Method identifies these strengths and capabilities in a framework of four general Organizational Strengths. Each of the four organizational strengths is represented by a different color and identifies the basic motivational direction that drives you towards your interests, overall approach and predispositions.
These colors filter your world view and determine how you choose to approach job assignments, solve problems and relate to people around you.
Business Coaching using The Birkman Method could be an option for you if you can relate to any of these statements.
- You need to improve communication.
- You need to increase your leadership effectiveness.
- You need to build a more cohesive team and reduce conflict.
- You have reached a plateau at work and aren’t advancing the way you want to be.
- You are looking for ways to be more effective at work.
- You are in what seems to be a dead-end job and you are searching for ways to find a new role.
- You are ready for a new opportunity, but don’t know what it is.
- You are stepping into a leadership role for the first time.
- You have been passed up for a promotion and need to get clearer on your next steps.
- You are looking for a career change and don’t know where to start.
The Birkman Method offers six broad areas of reports:
- Areas of Interest: Team areas that describe the work activities to which one would be attracted, the hobbies that would capture the individual and the type of activities or interests that bring the most pleasure or fulfillment. Does not measure talent or skill.
- Relational Components: Eleven components of behavior that describe one’s usually socialized style. This socialized style is considered the most effective style or one’s natural strengths. Also, describes how needs determine one’s ideal work environment and possible stress reactions when needs are not met.
- Life Style Grid: A four-color graphic representation of an individual’s socialized styles based on a model of how people behave in general. This summary can help clarify one’s communication style, reveal a task or people-oriented focus, and allow for the discovery of one’s unique relational strengths in an easy-to-understand graph.
- Preferred Work Styles: Fourteen scales that describe how one prefers to contribute to the organization and what the individual values in the work setting. Scales include information on management style, commitment to organization, societal view and problem solving.
- Organizational Focus: Four color bars that illustrate one’s fundamental work orientation and approach. Offers an overall reference as to which classic occupational group has the most or least appeal for an individual.
- Career Management Report: Comprehensive report that selects, identifies, and confirms one’s professional strengths. Occupational effectiveness is determined by how closely an individual’s responses match profiles of a large sampling of employees in twenty-three job families.
